Getting ready for the COOL weather!
As summer is coming to an end, it might be hard to believe that it is already time to prepare your furnace for fall and winter. The temptation to put it off and continue sipping lemonade under a ceiling fan is certainly powerful, but before you know it, throughout Delaware and Madison Counties the leaves will drop and the autumn evenings will get a bit chilly.
Here are a few things to consider before hunting for that first pumpkin of the season:
Change or clean the filter – While some furnaces use fiberglass replaceable filters others may have washable filters that have to be cleaned periodically. Take them outside and give them a bath with the garden hose. Good air flow through the filters is paramount for great production of warm, toasty air.
Make sure the moving parts are…moving – From model to model the parts may be different. Consult your owner’s manual to see exactly what parts need to be oiled, cleaned or replaced in your furnace including belts, bearings or blowers.
Get the creepy crawlies – Take a little time to clear webs, nests and other obstructions from your furnace. A clean running furnace may mean cleaner air for those in your family who may have allergies.
Make a strategic vent visit – While not in the physical area of the furnace itself, the vents should be inspected to make sure they are in the proper position. Perhaps one room isn’t used as often so the vent might be closed a bit or maybe even closed all the way. Being strategic about vent positions may provide more efficient heating in rooms you really want to be warmer.
Have a dress rehearsal – Don’t wait until the temperature dips to find out whether your furnace is in good working order. Fire it up (pun intended) and make sure you’re going to be nice and warm this winter. Being proactive may mean not having to wait in line for a service technician to arrive at your frosty little Hoosier cottage later this fall!
Lastly – Have an HVAC professional service your furnace if it is not working properly – don’t try to fix it yourself.
