Q: Do you use your own service technicians and installation specialists or do you hire subcontractors?

A: We use only our own certified, factory-trained technicians. We never hire subcontractors. Our skilled heating and cooling technicians are the most highly trained in the industry. To use subcontractors would be like taking a step down. Your comfort and our reputation are too important to put in anyone else’s hands.

Q: How long does it take to get an estimate on a new heating or cooling system?

A: We can usually give you an estimate the very next day (same day for no-heat emergencies). We can come out to your home at your convenience during the day or in the evening. We also give FREE second opinions on any new system. Don’t find out later that you’ve paid too much.

Service and Maintenance FAQ’s

Q: Do I really need routine maintenance on my heating and cooling equipment?

A: The answer is simple: YES! Your heating and cooling equipment is a major financial investment; routine maintenance protects that investment! We recommend at least 2 service visits per year to ensure your equipment runs as efficiently (lowest energy cost) and effectively (highest comfort level) as possible. Not only will the pre-season service visits extend the life of your equipment, our expert technicians can often spot and correct a potentially serious problem BEFORE it turns into a costly repair. Q: My furnace and air conditioner are both new. Do I really need to have it cleaned?

A: Yes! Even though your system is new, it still needs to have annual maintenance performed. This will help keep the warranty in effect. Most all equipment manufactures state in the terms of their warranty that annual maintenance must be performed by a qualified technician. Keeping your system maintained will give you assurance that it is operating at peak efficiency and safety.

Q: Another company installed our unit. Now, they won’t come out and service it. Will you?

A: Yes, we charge a diagnostic fee and if we discover a problem that needs correcting, we’ll explain it to you and quote a flat fee to do the work. We’ll do the same for air conditioning and other products installed by companies that won’t follow up with maintenance service. Most of the time we can honor other manufacturer’s parts warranty at no charge.

Q: Is there anything I need to do to get my heating system ready for winter?

A: Most heating systems are very reliable and will provide you with comfortable heat when you need it…providing you take good care of the system. Aerco Heating & Cooling highly recommends that your furnace system be cleaned and inspected by one of our professional technicians every year before the cold harsh winter sets in. One of the biggest killers in the home is carbon monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can be emitted by your furnace. Even low levels of carbon monoxide have been shown to be dangerous to all especially those with heart and lung disease, the elderly, pregnant woman, and children. Carbon monoxide poisoning produces flu-like symptoms, headache, sore throat, rapid heartbeats, memory loss, thinking difficulties, and sensitivity to light, sound, smell, etc. As the seasons change you are going to close your house up tight and ask your furnace to work hard all winter long. Q: What are some preventative maintenance things I should be aware of?

A: With proper attention, heating and cooling systems can keep you comfortable year-round. Air conditioners, heat pumps and gas-fired furnaces and boilers need a yearly professional tune-up. A close inspection will uncover leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires. In furnace (forced-air) and boiler (hot-water) systems, the inspection should also cover the chimney, ductwork or pipes, dampers or valves, blower or pump, registers or radiators, the fuel line as well as every part of the furnace or boiler itself. Next, the system should be run through a full heating cycle to ensure that it has plenty of combustion air and chimney draft. Finally, cleaning the burner and heat exchanger to remove soot and other gunk will prevent such buildup from impeding smooth operation. For the burner, efficiency hinges on adjusting the flame to the right size and color, adjusting the flow of gas, or changing the fuel filter in an oil-fired system. A check of air conditioners and heat pumps should include an inspection of the compressor, fan, indoor and outdoor coils, and refrigerant lines. Indoor and outdoor coils should be cleaned, and the refrigerant pressure should be checked.

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems FAQ’s

Q: Why should I replace my existing heating or air-conditioning system?

A: You may wish to consider replacing your air-conditioning or heating system if it is old, inefficient, or in need of repair. Today’s systems are as much as 60% more efficient than those systems manufactured as little as ten years ago. In addition, if not properly maintained, wear and tear on a system can reduce the actual or realized efficiency of the system. If you are concerned about utility bills or are faced with an expensive repair, you may want to consider replacing your system rather than enduring another costly season or paying to replace an expensive component. The utility cost savings of a new unit may provide an attractive return on your investment. If you plan on financing the purchase, the monthly savings on your utility bill should be considered when determining the actual monthly cost of replacing a system. The offsetting savings may permit you to purchase a more efficient system.

Q: How will I know it’s time to replace my system?

A: That’s easy. When your system starts giving you more problems and the problems are not cost effective to repair it’s time to replace the system. Newer equipment is more energy efficient. Q: If I am going to replace my old gas-guzzler furnace, do I need to replace it with the same BTU capacity?

A: In most cases the answer is ‘no’, you won’t need as large of a furnace. With today’s furnaces obtaining 90% and higher in efficiency you don’t need to spend the extra dollars on the larger units. Some of the older units waste as much as half of their heat by sending it up the flue. An Aerco Heating & Cooling comfort specialist can help you in deciding what system is right for your home.

Q: Is it OK to install a different brand of furnace (or air conditioner) to work with my existing air conditioner (or furnace)?

A: Most brands of equipment will work with others as long as the coils and blowers are the proper size. You may, however, experience some loss of efficiency and capacity.

Q: How long should a central air conditioner last?

A: The useful “life” of an air conditioner can vary greatly. Such factors as climate, maintenance care, and quality and capacity of the original equipment can increase or decrease the service a system will give by months or even years. On the average, a residential central air conditioner will last from ten to fifteen years. Q: Would I save money if I converted to another fuel or electricity?

A: One of the most efficient systems for our area is a heat pump Hybrid-Heat dual fuel system. A dual fuel system is comprised of an electric heat pump and a gas furnace. When the temperature is above 40°, the heat pump uses electricity to heat your home; when it gets very cold, the heat pump automatically switches to gas heat for greater efficiency. The climate in East Central Indiana is ideal for a Hybrid-Heat system. If you are switching from an older, conventional system, you’ll notice the energy savings right away.

Q: How expensive are heating, air-conditioning and heat pump systems?

A:Many factors affect the cost of a heating or air-conditioning system, including the size of your home, the type and condition of the ductwork installed, and accessories you might need such as a thermostat or an electronic air cleaner. We have a complete range of systems and accessories available to meet all your needs, including your financial ones! Aerco Heating & Cooling will be happy to assist you in finding the right system to meet not only your comfort needs but also your household budget.

Q: How do I select the right heating/cooling system?

A: First, make sure the unit is properly sized. Aerco Heating & Cooling comfort specialist will provide a load calculation for your home. He will also consider any comfort issues in the home. Some products can reduce air stratification and uneven temperatures from room to room. If you have allergies, an indoor unit with an ECM motor will allow you to circulate the air in your home continuously while filtering the air for about the same cost as operating a standard light bulb. Finally, he will compare the parameters and the efficiency of the system being proposed to determine if the system offers a payback? In other words, will the monthly savings over time offset the cost of the new unit or efficiency option being considered?

Q: What is involved in replacing an old system?

A: Aside from the placement of the new equipment, your Aerco heating & Cooling will inspect several items and make a determination of whether or not these items need to be supplied or replaced. Some of the items include: ductwork, insulation, refrigerant piping, electrical service, wiring, thermostat, condensate piping, flue piping, flue terminations, chimney liner, slabs, filters, driers, registers, grills, drain pans and evaporator coil.

Q: What is involved in installing a new system?

A: If a system is being added to the home for the first time, most of the items noted in the previous question and answer may be required to install the new system. Besides the equipment, the most significant component is ductwork. The ductwork can be either metal or fiberglass ductwork. The ductwork needs to be properly sized to deliver the right amount of air to each room. The ductwork consists of supply and return ductwork. The supply duct is attached to the outlet of the furnace or air handler and delivers air to individual zones in your home. Aerco Heating & Cooling will determine the size of the ductwork going into a space by the amount of air that needs to be delivered to the space.

Q: How long can I expect my new system to last?

A: If you have a qualified technician perform regular preventative maintenance and service suggested for your unit, industry averages suggest that an air conditioner should last 12-15 years and a gas furnace should last as many as 20 or more years.

Q: The air coming from the registers feels cool when my new heat pump is set for heating. Is there a problem?

A: While a heat pump is perfectly capable of effectively heating your home, the temperature of the air coming out of the registers is heated to about 90 to 95 degrees, depending on the outdoor temperature. This temperature is approximately 20 to 25 degrees warmer that the indoor air temperature and will warm your house. It is, however, below body temperature (98.6 degrees) and can feel cool when someone puts their hand in the airflow.

Indoor Comfort FAQ’s

Q: Should I replace my thermostat?

A: While thermostats rarely fail outright, they can degrade over time as mechanical parts stick or lose their calibration. Older units will send faulty signals if they’ve been knocked out of level or have dirty switches. To recalibrate an older unit, use a wrench to adjust the nut on the back of the mercury switch until it turns the system on and, using a room thermometer, set it to the correct temperature. Modern electronic thermostats, sealed at the factory to keep out dust and grime, rarely need adjusting. However, whether your thermostat is old or young, the hole where the thermostat wire comes through the wall needs to be caulked, or a draft could trick it into thinking the room is warmer or colder than it really is.

Q: At what temperature should I set my thermostat?

A: Different people feel comfortable at different temperatures. But typical settings are 60° heating/ 80o cooling when the house is unoccupied or everyone is sleeping; when everyone is home, a comfortable setting is 68°-70° heating/ 76° cooling.

Q: How Serious Is Indoor Air Pollution?

A: Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health but may not know that indoor air pollution also can have significant harmful effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor levels of many pollutants may be two to five times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels. Q: Should I have my ducts cleaned?

A: Yes, a maze of heating and air-conditioning ducts runs inside the walls and floors of 80 percent of American homes. As the supply ducts blow air into the rooms, return ducts inhale airborne dust and suck it back into the blower. Add moisture to this mixture and you’ve got a breeding ground for allergy-inducing molds, mites, and bacteria. Many filters commonly used today can’t keep dust and debris from streaming into the air, and over time, sizable accumulations can form in the duct… Think dust bunnies, but bigger! Professional duct cleaning insures indoor air quality, longer equipment life, and lower energy costs. Clean heating and air conditioning systems perform more efficiently, which decrease energy costs, and last longer, reducing the need for costly replacement or repairs.

Q: Which methods of payment do you accept and do you offer financing?
