Your Spring Cleaning Checklist
Springtime is upon us! And you know what that means…cleaning. Although it is a tradition for most families, there are some other “to-do’s” that should be part of your regular springtime. Most of them take only a few minutes and can save you a large amount of money in the long run. Be sure to keep these 3 quick tips in mind while preparing for spring to keep the air in your house as fresh as the air outside!
#1 Check your air-conditioner or heat pump unit
Most air-conditioners and heat pumps have drainage holes at the base of the cabinet, beneath the coils. These holes need to be kept clear of debris like leaves and grass clippings left over from last year. It is a good idea each spring to clean out these drainage holes. Also before the hot summer days arrive be sure to test your system by turning on and briefly running the unit. If your system needs repairs, you will have some time to schedule a service call before summer gets hot! The most obvious benefit in having periodic maintenance of your cooling system is extended life. A system replacement can be expensive, and extending the life of your system gives you additional time to save for the eventual need. Additionally, poor performance negatively affects energy use. Getting periodic tune-ups performed by your air conditioning service technician can save money in the long run and keep your system running efficiently day-to-day.
#2 Evaluate filters
There are several types of filters from which to choose, depending on your needs. Fiberglass filters last only one month, while higher quality filters can typically last thee to four months. Be sure to ask your HVAC service technician which quality filter is right for you, to save money and time!
#3 Ductwork
Your ventilation system, or “ductwork” is an important part of your home’s heating and air conditioning system. No matter how clean your house is, dust will always get into the supply air vents and cold air returns. Also, holes and leaks in the ducts will cause you to continually lose the air that you are paying to condition. Air-loss resulting from these imperfections can cost you as much as 20 percent of your energy bill. Seal holes and cracks in the duct system and make sure all connectors are airtight. A good duct cleaning technician won’t just sweep out your ducts. They will address every component of your system, including coils and the central system as a whole. If you are unsure if your ducts need cleaned or if you are losing valuable air, then contact your HVAC specialist to help in providing these services.

A Hybrid heat system reacts to changing temperatures and automatically adjusts to the most efficient energy saving method available to heat or cool a home. It is a fuel-saving alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems in that it combines a furnace with a heat pump, rather than an air conditioner. A heat pump works as an air conditioner in hot weather, but can also reverse the process and heat the home when cold weather arrives.
The reduction on fossil fuels being used also reduces the systems “carbon footprint” making it a more environmentally friendly approach to heating your home. If you are looking for a way to manage your heating and cooling bills, our Hybrid Heat solutions can help.
